Roots For Change UK was founded in 2023 by Magalys Noguera, a Nicaraguan community leader who arrived in the United Kingdom seeking safety and the opportunity to rebuild her life.

Having personally experienced many of the challenges faced by newly arrived individuals and families, Magalys gained a unique understanding of the barriers that people often encounter when trying to integrate into a new country. These challenges included language barriers, social isolation, lack of information about available services, financial hardship, limited access to opportunities and the emotional impact of starting again from scratch.

During her time volunteering and supporting members of the local community, Magalys witnessed a growing need for practical and compassionate support. She met families struggling to put food on the table, parents unable to afford essential items for their children, individuals facing loneliness and isolation, and many people who simply did not know where to turn for help.

Rather than waiting for solutions, she decided to take action.

What began as a small community initiative driven by compassion and a desire to help others soon developed into a wider movement of support, empowerment and community transformation.

Roots For Change UK was established on the belief that every person deserves dignity, opportunity and the chance to thrive, regardless of their background, nationality, circumstances or life experiences.

The organisation started by helping people with basic needs such as food, clothing, information, referrals and emotional support. However, it quickly became clear that communities needed more than emergency assistance. People needed opportunities to learn, grow, connect and become independent.

As a result, Roots For Change UK expanded its work to include education, employability support, digital inclusion, health and wellbeing activities, volunteering opportunities, community development programmes and initiatives designed to reduce poverty and social exclusion.

Since its foundation, the organisation has grown significantly and now supports more than 1,200 beneficiaries annually through a wide range of services and community projects.

Today, Roots For Change UK operates Community Shops, Community Food Markets, ESOL programmes, digital inclusion initiatives, free SIM card distribution, Stop Smoking support, Zumba and fitness activities, Emergency Children’s Boxes, volunteering pathways and family support programmes.

The organisation has also begun developing international humanitarian initiatives, extending its mission beyond the United Kingdom while maintaining strong governance, accountability and safeguarding standards.

The name “Roots For Change” reflects the charity’s core belief that lasting transformation begins at the roots. Strong families create strong communities. Strong communities create opportunities. Opportunities create change.

​

Roots For Change UK exists because everyone deserves the opportunity not only to survive difficult circumstances, but to rebuild their lives, discover their potential and create a better future.
